Although many people think this night occurred on the 27th night in the 7th Lunar Month of Rajab, the fact of the matter is that the exact date, or month, let alone the year are not concrete. The famous scholar of The Sīrah of The Prophet ﷺ, Al-Zurqānī, claims that there are at least 6 possible months. They are: Rabīʿ al-Awwal (3), Rabīʿ al-Thānī (4), Rajab (7), Ramaḍān (9), Shawwāl (10), and Dh al-Ḥijjah (12). The Legendary Ḥadīth Master of India, Al-Muḥaddith ʿAbd Al-Ḥaqq Al-Dehlawī mentions in his book on the virtues of The Islamic Months, that most scholars consider this wonderful event to have occurred either in Ramāḍan or Rabīʿ al-Awwal.
It is also very important to note that we are not in any way ‘celebrating’ this amazing event. Because a quick glance at the beautiful life of God’s Beloved Prophet ﷺ shows us that he ﷺ never celebrated this event, and he ﷺ had the most right to. If he ﷺ lived for at least 12 years after the occurrence of this event [since the year of its occurrence is also debated, and could be from the 5th year of prophethood, or even up until the 11th], and didn’t once single out this day to tell him companions about this joyous event, we have to be sure that we aren’t going against his perfect teachings ﷺ. Especially since we claim to love him ﷺ more than anyone else [may God actualize this love in our hearts, Āmīn!]. So at the end of the day, this event is being hosted so we can all learn about this great event in the life of Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ, and to further increase in our love him ﷺ. We, the organizers, are not known to single out dates for his praise ﷺ, rather we spread it out evenly throughout the year with classes and seminars such as this. There should be no confusing our goal and intent here. May God ﷻ guide us and correct our intentions and actions, Āmīn.
