As-salām ʿalaykum O Servant of The Beloved,
This is just a tiny gift to hopefully get our Sunnah-ness fired up. So, why do we follow The Sunnah of Our Beloved Messenger ﷺ?
Allāh ﷻ Himself makes His Divine Love conditional on following His Beloved Prophet ﷺ. “[My Beloved Prophet ﷺ] Tell them [your followers]: 'If you truly claim to love God, then follow me! God will then love you [...]'” [Qurʾān 3:31]
The Prophet ﷺ himself tells us to follow his perfect Sunnah ﷺ. “You must follow my Sunnah! [...] And grab onto it with your molars!” [T. #2676, AD. #4607]
Following His Sweet Sunnah ﷺ is a sign of our love for him ﷺ, and allows us to spend all of eternity with him ﷺ in Paradise. He ﷺ said “[...] Whoever keeps My Sunnah alive truly loves me. And those who truly love me, will be with me [forever] in Paradise.” [T. #2678]
So what Sunnah goodies do we have?
Miswāk: Using this branch to brush our teeth [in addition to a regular toothbrush with toothpaste].
The Prophet ﷺ said “If I wasn't afraid that it would become a burden for my [beloved] followers, I would've commanded them to use miwāk”. [B. #7240, M. #252]
The Prophet ﷺ said “Using miwāk cleans the mouth, and Pleases The Lord.” [N. #5, IM. #289]
Kuḥl: Anointing the eyes with antimony [ithmid] before going to sleep.
The Prophet ﷺ said “Use ithmid because it strengthens the eyesight, and lengthens the eyelashes.” [T. #1757, AD. #3878, N. #5113]
The Prophet ﷺ had a kuḥl container [mukḥalah] from which he ﷺ would apply ithmid to his beautiful eyes an odd number of times before going to sleep.” [T. #1757]
Ṭīb: Applying perfume and smelling nice.
The Prophet ﷺ said “From this world, [...] perfume [has] been made dear to me [...]” [IM. #3939]
Duhn: Oiling and combing our hair [and beards] regularly. Starting with our right hands, and our eyebrows. If you’re married, your spouse can also oil your hair.
The Prophet ﷺ mentioned a number of actions to be done on Friday, among them is oiling the hair. He ﷺ said that doing these actions will result being forgiven for the actions done between two Fridays. [B. #883, 885]
Our Mother, ʿĀʾishah [rḍ] would regularly oil the beautiful hair of The Prophet ﷺ. She would remark years later “It’s like I can still see the scented oil on the hair-part of The Messenger of God ﷺ”. [B. #1537-8, 2028-9]
Super Special Sunnah Gift:
Naʿl: This is a rendered shape of the blessed sandal of The Prophet ﷺ.
Anas [rḍ] kept a pair of the sandals of The Prophet ﷺ. [B. #5858]
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged wearing sandals. [AD. #4133]
Ibn ʿUmar [rḍ] loved wearing the same style of sandals as The Prophet ﷺ, for no other reason than the fact that The Prophet ﷺ wore them. [B. #116, M. #1187, AD. #1772, N. #5244]
Poem by Abū Bakr al-Qurṭubī [rḥ]:
| وإنّا متى نخضع لها أبدا نعلو | ونعل خضعنا هيبة لبهائها |
| حقيقتها تاج وصورتها نعل | فضعها على أعلى المفارق إنّها |
| على التّاج حتّى باهت المفرق الرّجل | بأخمص خير الخلق حازت مزيّة |
| أمان لذي خوف، كذا يحسب الفضل | شفاء لذي سقم، رجاء لبائس |
Out of awe for the Sandal's splendor, we humbled ourselves before it;
For as long as we humble ourselves before it, we will elevated!
So place it on the top of your head, for in reality,
It is a crown whose form is that of a Sandal!
By the sole of The Best of Creation, it is superior,
To any crown, such that [his foot] surpasses the parting line of the head!
It is a healing for the suck, a hope for the suffering;
A security for the frightened; such are its virtues!
